What's New
Dr Forman has recently
attended a seminar dealing with the problems of patients
on Bisphosphonate Therapy. The information at
the seminar was the latest from the Academy of Oral
and Maxillofacial Surgeons. More information is
available on there website.
Patients undergoing Bisphosphonate
Therapy are at a greater risk of developing the
serious potential problems of jaw necrosis after taking
these medications. The risks increase greatly for patients
who have been taking the oral medication over 3 years
and for those on the intravenous treatments for 5 months.
Please inform Dr Forman, how long you
have been taking this drug so that appropriate precautions
can be taken for dental treatment. It is important to
discuss these potential problems with your physician.
It is recommended that patients on this therapy have
their physician request a serum CTX blood test to be
taken to assess your potential risk for developing oral
jaw necrosis.
These problems have become more noticeable
over the last 5 years. Risk assestment, evaluation and
prevention are most important to keep all of our patients
healthy.
Dr. Forman has recently
completed a series of classes on Sleep Apnea
at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New
Jersey.
He has been taught procedures
that will help to treat some of the patients who suffer
from these problems.
It is interesting how many
people, health professionals included, do not understand
how sever the health risks are for those who suffer
these conditions and the effect that it has on those
whom they live with.
Patients who suffer from
sleep apnea or snoring should be first diagnosed
by a sleep study. That way the optimal treatment decisions
can be made for them.
